Not really. Most computers are sold off a shelf at a big box store, pre-configured and ready to go. The license for windows is flashed onto the hardware, so the staff doesn’t really have a way to remove it from the computer.

This is wild to hear? What year(s) are we talking on these Asus laptops? Everything Asus I’ve bought has been rock solid, and I go out of my way to get their hardware. I haven’t really bought any new systems or components in about 5 years though…

The things you mentioned probably aren’t the problem. It’s not hard or expensive to setup secure remote access for systems.

The real problem is that a lot of this very expensive and very specific infrastructure equipment is also very old, and frequently does not support newer and more secure protocols.

Seconding this. I put my mom’s laptop on Mint because that was easier than supporting her on Windows. She freaking loves it because she’s not constantly bring pestered to sign into accounts, and she has an easy way to get software and features added to her computer without needing to call me.

Yeah, I was going to add that application management is so much better in Mint than the Windows store has ever been. Winget works alright, but you gotta use powershell for it, so “90% of users will think your product is shit.”
