The Framework laptops have been selling out with backlog orders now. But with new models recently out, all the Linux ones sold out well before the Windows ones.

I think it just kind of goes to say, if you know a bit about computers, Linux is a go-to. Of course those that are a bit tech-savvy as well would just get a Windows one, clear it off and install the distro of their choice. Plus once upgrade is done, my OS and files are all there like nothing happened. Things like setting up Windows again on a new device or new install is like a full day task.

Seriously, I don’t see what data centres give their hosts. They barely require a workforce after setup, they rip through resources, they fuck with the environment, they offer no municipal services, and they’re eyesores. At best they’re a form of property tax revenue and I guess rates revenue.

And games they licence, even when the devs want to continue working on them.

The is awesome in one way, but terrible in others. Anthropic and OpenAI can afford this (bullshit!) but their latest open source competitors cannot. In a way, it may be helping lock in monopolies if open source can’t cut them down a bit first. It should go a step further by limiting companies from dominating the industry in nations they aren’t even based in. Currently, it’s accepting that data centres owned by big companies/corporations is how the AI industry is and will be.

Sure it’s not what they wanted, but sweeping in and locking down the industry in Australia will be great for their shaky plans for IPO.

I’m no lawmaker or expert, but I see this as important as anything else the Australian government thinks it’s thought of.
