Yeah it’s a shame, I’d be up for some augmented reality. Except it would mostly be ads, and too many people can’t be trusted not to be pervy with the cameras.

Same as me, except I never went back. I don’t spend as much time here as I used to on reddit, but most of that was wasted time anyway.
Yeah, look at Zuckerberg, who recently burned billions on his crappy virtual reality project, and is now doing the same with AI.

TBF we already have hugely invasive surveillance, at least here in the UK. Successive governments have cut policing and invested in cameras instead. It hasn’t made us safer, but we kind of got boiled-frogged into living in a panopticon. There was a bit of negative publicity recently about use of facial recognition at choke-points like major public transport hubs - but it never really went anywhere. Make people feel scared and they will give up their rights for the illusion of security.

Yeah, right. My boss gave me a bunch of risk assessments to read through and let slip that AI had ‘helped’ produce them. So I said I’d get AI to summarise them. All this vast computing power and climate damage is being used for bullshit.

Ah, sorry that didn’t even occur to me, thanks for the info.

Yeah, I get the impression newer cars are designed to fail just outside warranty because the car companies make more on the dealerships repairs then they do on the sale of the car.

I guess maybe microwaves are not on the list because they have big meaty capacitors that could be holding a charge still?

Yeah this could be great. Part of my job involves clearing up fly tip, dumped rubbish, and a shit load of it is electric appliances. Most people don’t know how to use a multimeter, but you only need to know someone who does.

Maybe there’s a fab shop by you that could print the part? Or a local enthusiasts group or something? Never used one so no idea of price but small part, prob not too expensive. I guess finding the part spec would be the challenge. Maybe they can scan the broken one or something. I actually have no clue about 3d printing so this may not be a helpful suggestion 🤷

Fuck sake. . . In the old days you’d have got a trophy for that.
I wonder what they’d have done if you’d shown ‘Mild satisfaction’ or worse yet, ‘Utter joy’. Probably sent a mod round to crap on your doorstep.
“We’ll have robots! Robots to do the product placement, robots to tell them how to think, robots to tell them which political candidate to vote for. We don’t need these human users - they complain a lot and, believing they’re come to the site to socialise or learn, they frequently disappoint when it comes to those three core strategies.”
“But who will do the shopping, the thinking, and the voting?”
“Why, the robots, of course! They’ve been doing a lot of these things for some years now, and quite successfully too. Which is why my tech portfolio is up and trump is president.”
“Hmm. When you put it like that, I guess we don’t need humans at all.”
“Alas, there are some areas where the tech isn’t quite there yet. Remember Sarah complaining about the state of the ladies bathrooms the other day? ‘An abomination of blood, shit, and hair’ I believe she called it. The robots just aren’t ready for that, we had to call that immigrant fellow from maintenance. Still, give the tech another couple of years and I imagine we can get rid of him, too.”

I’m a bit surprised YouTube isn’t higher. I guess meta products are just spectacularly scummy.

While it’s sad to see America burying itself under a dung heap, at least we got a chuckle at the credulous idiots who lost everything on the trump coin rugpull.

Also, can the ad connection be hacked to show, for example, regular reminders that the president is a rapist. . ?

It’s kinda weird how this slogan got so much cultural traction. Years later and it’s still a meme. I guess because it’s irrelevant to the issue - IIRC it was about piracy - and also because it’s completely wrong. I would absolutely download a car if I could. So would pretty much everyone.

Yeah, kinda like a long, slimy tail. Dragging on the ground when he walks down the street, getting dirt and cigarette butts stuck to it. He’d have to kinda throw it over his shoulder to keep it from getting stepped on, so occasionally it would fart sadly, right next to his face.

Yeah, I think this is a common experience. I quit a couple of years ago when they did the API thing, but the impression I get is that loads of people have been getting banned for similarly ridiculous reasons. Seems kinda self destructive. I left voluntarily, but I’d been there a long time, over ten years, think I had almost a million comment karma. This is also the case for many of the people getting banned - users who’d been there a really long time and who were mostly people who contributed content and comments. Maybe management thought they don’t need the old school users now they have bots, and bots that can slip in product endorsements and try to manipulate political opinion. In fact, a lot of the people who’d been around the longest and contributed most were probably more likely to notice and complain about the huge influx of bots and bullshit.
Still seems self destructive, though, but I guess after the IPO short term gains are more important than community. Their loss is Lemmy’s gain. Like you say, fuck em.

Nah, they just lube up the rubber gloves and fist you, checking in case there’s a micro SD stashed up there. You should still make your flight if you relax.
