I’m not sure about Tumblr because I don’t have an account, but I have seen people get bullied online (various platforms) for tracing their own photographs for example.

I’m not talking about references. I obviously don’t have a screenshot of every single interaction I’ve ever had in online art communities. You’re just going to have to believe that I have no malicious intent in making my post.

In the online art community, “tracing” means you’re a bad artist and cheating, people get doxed and bullied offline for tracing.

For real artists, using tools to trace real-life objects and photographs is normal, and has been since medieval times. Not the photograph part of course, but real life objects can be traced or copied using various methods, and it’s perfectly acceptable to do so.
