How can i teach myself to contribute to these projects?

I use open source self hosted software everyday. I love the community and I would love to be able to contribute to some of these projects.

As far as code goes, I basically no nothing about how it works. I see the development section of the repos I use and again, I’ve go no idea how it works.

How can I teach myself how to offer small improvements to the projects I use?

Considerations when buying an LSI HBA?

Hi everyone

I’m looking to expand my storage. I have a case capable of 8 bays and I don’t think I’ll exceed that soon (currently at 3 drives).

I bought a m.2 slot with a bunch of sata ports on it but it doesn’t work. I’ve researched and read an HBA is a much better solution anyway.

If I’m going to get the HBA I might as well run all 8 ports on it.

Aside from the clearance on the card in the case, are there any other considerations I need to he aware of? I justbeant to get something that works from the get go. For my uses I have a good amount of apps and I stream media from the server

Looking for a solution for training videos/courses (+ big list of LMS software)

Hi everyone

I’m looking for a software that can do courses, basically a self hosted udemy type thing.

I’ve looked into just using jellyfin for this and it kind of works but not well. Granted its not what the software was designed for.

It seems what i need is an LMS. But I wanted to ask here to see

I probably have about 25 courses of various topics but in all likely hood its just going to be me and a few of my friends using it.

As far as deployment goes, I only really know docker compose for this

I’ve look at these but keen to hear from anyone if they have used one and how it went

Is there anyone that would be interest in doing a video call with me to show me how all this cloudflare/nginx/authentication works? I can pay

Hello everyone

Last week I bought a domain with the intention of connecting it to my NAS so I can access my apps over the internet without tailscale (plus give access to a few family members on jellyfin). I did it through clourflare.

I was very naïve but I had no ideal of the sheer amount of learning it would require to achieve the things I’m looking to do (just basic access with some additional authentication). So far I’ve managed to publish my immich server (behind a authentication screen) but largely still very confused about how its actually working. And very confused about setting up external auth and using reverse proxy. Honestly feeling quite defeated.

I’ve posted here in the selfhosted Lemmy and you guys have been really helpful but I think I could really benefit from someone showing me and explaining how it works. I have already learnt a lot from last week but the more I learn the more questions I have.

I’ve taught myself home networking, I knew nothing about it before I built a NAS, but with this I just want to be sure I’m doing it right.

I can pay you. Not heaps but hopefully enough for 20-30 minutes of your time. Not trying to rip anyone off here haha

Thanks for all your continued advice on this
