Willing to elaborate on “knitting debacle”? I’m a late and infrequent watcher of his YouTube channel.

Oh no! Not the knitting debacle

Been a minute since I watched it, but essentially Scishow did an episode about the science of knitting (and other forms of fabric crafting, which they did not adequately distinguish between) without consulting a single person who knits. It came off as really dismissive of the craft, like it’s somehow super surprising that knitting is actually interesting.

I got this vibe from stuff you should know podcast once early on, but after i was mad at them for a while, I still listen, and they seem to do a better job now.

When you’re making edutainment for a general audience, there’s going to be some things that will seem obvious to experts, so i can’t really knock them for that.

But I can knock them for not doing their research and putting out wrong information, especially if they don’t retract it later.

Hank hasn’t been in charge at scishow for a while. When he is on scishow now, his job is read and present an article written by someone else. The fact checking and editorializing was done before he arrived for shooting the video. He also has publicly said it’s not his place to jump back into that company and grab back power he has given up. Being mad at Hank for the knitting thing is insane if you are familiar with how scishow works.

They don’t have him reading scripts at random. He’s Hank “Creator of Sci Show” Green. He lends an air of credibility to the channel, and the fact that they got their story about knitting so incredibly wrong damages the credibility of both him and the channel.

I don’t disagree with that. I just disagree with the placement of the outrage.
