The machine is definitely Turing-complete, and definitely NOT trying to pretend to be human. It’s AI claim is for a cloud-based feature I don’t use that adjusts the cycle stages over time to maximize cleanliness and minimize wear on the contents based on personal usage patterns and detected content types.

The machine does do a few neat things like check water retention of the contents before starting the load (it weighs the contents, adds a known volume of water, drains without spinning and checks the weight difference and the dirtiness of the drained water). There’s no way I want it feeding all my washing data into a massive online data lake for AI analysis though, so I keep that bit disconnected.

Always have been. Orin nano/nx SoMs are in all sorts of weapons systems. NixOS had a whole community civil war because Anduril heavily adopted NixOS and integrated it with Jetpack, the BSP that these run. They’re kind of a PITA to use (fuck you WayneWWW…IYKYK) but they’re easily the highest performance SoM of that size and the power consumption is workable for these kinds of…short lived systems. I think they started out targeting automotive applications and never really took off in the commercial world despite being comparable to Apple silicon in performance because they have no power saving modes. They ended up being perfect for doing real time object detection from a MIPI camera though so now they’re the gold standard for bleeding edge slaughterbots.

Before the Orin, a lot of more experimental systems were using the TX2i and Xavier modules, but they had much less computing power and the image recognition models weren’t as capable anyway.

Which means the components are pretty widely available. I’m not sure how you’d prevent someone from ordering a bunch to an in-between country and then shipping them on to Russia after.

As someone with previous defense connections, I’d been wondering when we’d see this.

ITAR has severely restricted access to nav system tech export, but there was always this open question about reckoning position by visual cues rather than GPS + dead reckoning. We all knew it was technically feasible, but we assumed that having “visual” cues was further out because AI at the time wasn’t up to the task.

The answer is the same, though. Nvidia, willing or not, is now a defendant in an unjust war, and must be subpoena’d by the ICC. At a minimum, they should be immediately sanctioned by foundry specialists (like ASML) until they are prepared to account for how, exactly, this tech ended up in a Russian missile.

There’s always going back to the old-fashioned method of having a trained pigeon inside of the device instead of a sophisticated computer vision system.

Was talking with a coworker recently about how ITAR/EAR rules are hilariously out of date. Basic IMUs coming from China these days are good enough that you can establish a reasonable dead reckoning nav to where those parts of the munitions list are just defunct. Shit I did that in college ten years ago with high power rockets and things have only gotten better.

The new proposed regulations over AI chips are also wildly misguided and demonstrate how Congress/Executive branch have no idea what the tech even is. The top of the line chips today are needed for LLMs, fast fixture acquisition and tracking can be done on a way less powerful piece of hardware that new regulations will fail to stop (that’s even assuming that the bans would have worked in the first place, which they won’t)

It makes sense to use Machine Learning technology (not the Generative crap, the actual pattern recognition stuff) for terminal target recognition.

The surprise would be if Russia did not use AI in their newest cruise missile design - just because their society is fucked up and their leadership is a socipathic, disconnected autocrat surrounded by yes men that put his own personal pride above the lives of millions of his countrymen, doesn’t mean Russia doesn’t have the people with the technical knowledge to design systems with AI (though certainly far fewer of those than they had before they tried to invade Ukraine, since a ton of the Russians with the highest qualifications left).

I mean, given them another 50 years or so in their current trajectory, but for now they’re probably still capable of creating their own high-tech solutions in focused applications.

For many years when I lived in Britain I had a good friend and for a while work colleague who came from Russia. At least when he studied there (so, 30 years ago) their educational system at least for Science and Mathematics was no worse than those in Europe. In fact it’s one of the few good things the so-called “Communist” countries tend to do - they invest heavilly in Education.

Beyond that, there are two different things:

  • One is a country’s capabilities to have sizable industries operating at a certain technological level.
  • The other one is finding a handful of specialists for very specific design projects in highly controlled environments where making a profit is no concern.

Whilst it makes sense that Russia has trouble in the first case of actually doing high tech as a business, in size and profitably, because they at least did have a very good educational systems in Science and Mathmatics it also makes sense that they do have people with the know-how there which they could gather for specific high tech design projects were “money is not a problem” since they did train techies as good as the rest of Europe and it was not that long ago so those people are still alive.
