Heureusement !

Today, I’m letting you know that toot.community will close permanently on 28 October 2026.
This decision is final, and the server won’t be handed over to anyone else.
When I started running toot.community, I really enjoyed it. Over time, it became more stressful and less rewarding.
Every day, I deal with spam, bots, technical issues, abuse reports, and user conflicts. Much of the moderation ends up being about personal disagreements rather than actual rule-breaking.
More importantly, I don’t enjoy how people interact on social media anymore. Too often, conversations turn hostile or confrontational. A small amount of conflict and bad actors takes up a disproportionate amount of time and energy.
I find myself feeling more angry or discouraged after spending time as an admin, and that’s not what I want from social media or a volunteer project.
There’s also the financial side. I’m very grateful to everyone who donated, but donations haven’t covered costs for a long time. I’ve had to shoulder most of the expenses, time, and responsibility myself.
The server is now closed to new registrations and will remain online until 28 October 2026, so you’ll have three months to find another Mastodon or Fediverse server and move your account.
You can find Mastodon’s official migration guide here: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/
Please note that Mastodon can move your followers, but it can’t transfer your old posts or uploaded media to your new account. If you want to keep a copy, download an archive.
If you’d like to stay in touch, you can follow my personal account here (@jorijn).

Whenever you see a journalist doing good work on Bluesky, but not yet on Mastodon or the wider Fediverse, ask them to follow @ap.brid.gy@ap.brid.gy to bridge their Bluesky account.
They may not be interested in joining the Fediverse, but why not a bridge? ;)

@Alice No joke. In Russia there is a city called Perm, Пермь in Russian (Permian era in geology is named after it — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian). Guess what the URL of their news website was. Now it's PermNews.ru, before it was the same words, but the other way around 😂

YouTube shorts should be a separate app, that Google can kill off when they realize no one wants to watch YouTube shorts.

Sorry to anyone who's been having issues with streaming timelines on dragonscave.space in the past hour or so. Noticed this broke right in the middle of my workday, which is right when you want to discover service outages. Restarted everything like usual but actually upgraded our node.js and deps to the latest versions this time, so this will hopefully leave me alone for a while now.

An aria of experts?
A guideline of WCAG pros?
An assistance of experts?

For those people using Suno.
It is worth saying they are changing their terms of service as of 3 September. If you are on a Pro plan, you can now only download 20 songs per month.
That's probably enough for most people, and certainly we have all of our songs anyway, but it is worth knowing.

I've already told you Quinn is amazing. for example, that's why.
Had a really interesting maintainer experience today that I think perfectly captures the nuance of the current AI coding situation.
I got an AI-generated PR on Paperback from a new contributor with a very small GitHub profile. My default stance isn't anti-AI and I've even used Claude on Paperback's codebase as recently as yesterday, but open source is getting flooded with automated slop, so I left a polite comment asking for a bit of human-written justification for the feature and confirming if they had actually tested it manually, and I received a well-thought-out, genuine response. The contributor is a long-time computer scientist who doesn't know Rust, using Claude Code to build an accessibility feature to make Paperback optionally match NVDA's browse mode navigation that directly improves their daily workflow. They tested it on their end, I double-checked the diff and edge cases on mine, everything looked great, and it got merged.
To me, this hits the exact middle ground of how AI in OSS should work: A knowledgeable developer used a tool to bridge a gap and ship a genuinely valuable accessibility feature to an app they use. If I had a strict "no AI" policy, this contribution would have been shut down immediately, and both the project and the user would be worse off for it. But still, human oversight is mandatory. If maintainers just let everything slip through without pushback, repositories quickly get overrun with untested slop PRs.

André Polykanine boosted
